Vaqueros Walk-off and Eliminate Warriors 5-4

06.02.2022

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo - A relatively quiet game got loud late when Dusty Garcia's walk-off home run advanced the Vaqueros over Wabash Valley 5-4 in game 16 of the Alpine Bank Junior College Baseball World Series.

Central Arizona (58-13) struck first in the first.  Ryan Ball led the inning off with a single followed by a walk by Jaylin Rae.  After a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third, Logan Valencia singled to left, scoring both Rae and Ball, making it 2-0 Vaqueros.

For the first time in the World Series in 2022, the scoring would be quiet through six innings.

In the seventh, Wabash Valley (59-9) took advantage of a pair of leadoff walks, scoring in the next at bat courtesy of a RBI single by Brian Kalmer.  After a strikeout, Myles Austin battled at the plate before doubling down the left line, scoring two and giving Wabash Valley their first lead at 3-2.

Kiko Romero wouldn’t allow that lead to last for long has he hit the second pitch of the first at bat of the seventh about 35 feet over the right field wall, tying the game up at three.

In the eighth inning, Trey Newman, from the nine-hole, gave the Vaqueros the 4-3 lead after he hit a solo home run to left field.  Rae would walk on the next at bat and would be stranded at first base.

In the ninth, Wabash Valley was down to the last three outs of their season.  Kalmer took the tournament lead in RBI with a solo home run to right center, tying the game up at 4.  The Warriors would load the bases, but would not score again.

Dusty Garcia only needed one pitch in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.  Garcia hit the ball to center field, winning the game for the Vaqueros and ending the season of Wabash Valley.

Central Arizona found a way to win with only six hits.  Valencia went 1-4 with a pair of RBIs.  Garcia went 1-4.  His only hit and RBI, the walk off home run.

Kalmer went 3-5 with two RBI while Austin went 2-4 with two RBI.  Wabash Valley left 14 men on base.  Central Arizona left 12.

Central Arizona will play on Friday at 7:00pm against Walters State, no matter the result of game 18 (Walters State/Cowley).  If Walters State wins game 18, Friday night will be for the National Championship.  If Cowley wins, they will advance to the National Championship game.  Central Arizona will play Walters State in the semifinal game due to the number of games played.
