The Monroe Mustangs are back in Grand Junction for the second straight year. They earned their World Series trip by sweeping the Eastern District Championship, run-ruling host Harford (CT) and beating Spartanburg Methodist (SC) in the championship game 8-3. They have only lost a pair of games dating back to the beginning of April.
Offensively, they are led by freshman infielder Daniel Alfonzo. Hitting .357, he is the category leader in hitting percentage, RBI (39), and home runs (9). Fellow freshman infielder Gustavo Gonzalez is hitting .310 and has stolen 14 bases.
From the bump, sophomore righty Brandon Backman leads the team in wins, holding a record of 8-2. He has a 2.64 ERA with 92 strikeouts in 61.1 innings of work.
