Fiala led Meramec (Missouri) Community College to a runner-up finish in the 1975 World Series as a freshman. The former high school All-American was drafted by his hometown St. Louis Cardinals, but turned down a chance to play at Meramec. During the JUCO World Series, Fiala not only was selected the tournament MVP, he won the Rawlings Big Stick award as the tournament's top hitter, .524.
After playing at Southern Illinois, he was drafted again by the Cardinals and played six seasons in the Cardinals and Cincinnati systems.

He returned to St. Louis Community College, which merged Meramec with several other community colleges, and has compiled a an 817-445 record as a head coach.
