Howard College of Big Spring, TX made their first appearance in the JUCO Tournament a lasting one, as the Hawks won the National Championship. It was not an easy road for the Texans. They played six games, finished with a 5-1 record and won two games in extra innings. The hawks were lead by MVP Frank Rodriguez, who tied a tournament record of 33 strikeouts and won two games.
MVP
Frank Rodriguez dazzled the huge crowd in the finals of the JUCO National Championship game, with his 98 MPH fast ball and his competitive spirit to fan 17 Manatee (FL) players on his way to MVP honors. The slim right-hander also played shortstop and hit .333 plus one home run. Rodriguez signed with the Boston Red Sox after the tournament, for a reported $250,000 and is currently in the Red Sox Minor League system.
